What Should a Newborn Wear in Winter? Month-by-Month Guide (India)
A newborn in an Indian winter should wear a cotton jhabla as the base layer, a woollen sweater or cardigan over it, and a cap, socks and mittens, with a knitted blanket added for sleep. How many of those layers you actually need changes from October to January and from Delhi to Chennai, which is why a single answer never quite works. This guide goes month by month, day and night, north and south, and ends with the five pieces we would buy first.
October vs December vs January
Indian winter arrives slowly and leaves quickly, and your baby's wardrobe should follow the calendar rather than a fixed idea of "winter clothes".
October and early November
Days are still warm in most of the country; only nights and early mornings have cooled. A cotton jhabla during the day, a full-sleeve jhabla with a sleeveless woollen vest or a light cardigan in the evening, and socks at night. A cap for the first few weeks after birth regardless of the month, since newborns lose heat through the head. Skip the full sweater set unless you are in the hills.
Late November and December
This is when the north turns properly cold and even coastal cities have cool evenings. A full-sleeve jhabla plus a sweater or cardigan becomes the daytime default in the north. Cap, socks and mittens go on for all outings and at night. A knitted blanket over the cot sheet for sleep. In Mumbai, Pune and further south, the cardigan comes out for mornings and evenings and goes back in the cupboard by noon.
January and early February
The coldest stretch for Delhi, Punjab, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and the hills. A jhabla, a sweater set, cap, socks, mittens and a pyjama-style bottom, then a blanket for sleep. If your home dips below 15°C at night, a second thin layer under the sweater, such as a full-sleeve cotton vest, is warmer than one thick sweater because trapped air holds heat. By mid-February, start peeling layers off again.
A practical note on sizing: a baby born in September will be 3 to 4 months old in January. Buy the woollens in the size the baby will be in January, not the size they are today. Our newborn 0-3 months and 3-6 months collections are graded by weight as well as age; if in doubt, take the larger one.
Day vs night layers
Daytime and night-time dressing are different problems. During the day the baby is held, fed and moved between rooms, and you can see when they are uncomfortable. At night you cannot, and the room is at its coldest.
Daytime
- Base: cotton jhabla, half or full sleeve depending on the month. Cotton wicks sweat and protects skin from direct contact with wool.
- Middle: a cardigan on cooler days. Front-open is easier to take on and off during feeds and nappy changes than a pullover.
- Cap and socks as needed. Indoors in a warm room, take the cap off so the baby does not overheat.
Night-time
- Base: full-sleeve jhabla or a cotton night suit.
- Middle: a sweater from a sweater set, cap, socks and mittens.
- Top: a cotton sheet, then a knitted baby blanket tucked in below the shoulders. Keep bedding light; heavy quilts and loose pillows are not recommended for babies under one year. Ask your paediatrician about safe sleep for your home.
Do not rely on a room heater to replace a layer. Heaters dry the air and switch off; a sweater does not.
North vs South India
The same December advice reads very differently in Chandigarh and Coimbatore. We knit in Navi Mumbai and sell across the country, so we hear both sides.
North India, the hills and the central plains
Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal and everywhere north of them get a real winter with night temperatures in single digits in January. Here the full list applies: jhabla, sweater set or cardigan, cap, socks, mittens, blanket. A hooded set or a woollen poncho is useful for outings. Two sweater sets in rotation are the practical minimum because one is always drying.
Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata and the coast
Winter is mild and humid. The baby needs a cotton base all day, a sleeveless vest or light cardigan for early morning and evening, and a cap and socks for evenings near the sea. A full sweater set is for the occasional cold snap or a trip to visit family in the north. Many coastal parents buy one cardigan and one blanket and nothing else, and that is sensible.
Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and the Deccan
Cool mornings, warm afternoons. A cardigan over the jhabla until about 10 am and again after 6 pm, socks at night, blanket for sleep. Sweater sets come out on the coldest December mornings.
Whatever the city, the base layer is the same: soft cotton jhablas that open at the front. Everything woollen goes over that.
Signs your baby is too warm (or too cold)
Newborns cannot tell you, but their bodies do. Check the back of the neck or the chest with the back of your hand.
- Too warm: damp hair, sweaty neck or back, flushed cheeks, restlessness, a heat rash on the neck or chest. Remove one layer and take the cap off indoors.
- Too cold: cool chest or tummy (not just hands and feet), pale or bluish lips, unusual fussiness or sleepiness. Add a layer, put the cap on, and hold the baby against you.
- Normal: slightly cool hands and feet with a warm chest. This is common and not a reason to add a layer.
Overdressing is the more frequent mistake in Indian homes, especially with visiting grandparents adding shawls. If the baby feels unwell, has a fever or is unusually drowsy, consult your paediatrician rather than adjusting clothing alone.
Our 5-piece newborn winter starter list
If you buy nothing else, buy these five, all in 0-3M for a baby arriving between October and January, or 3-6M if the baby will be past six weeks old by the coldest month.
- 1. Three to four cotton jhablas, full sleeve, front-open. The base layer for every outfit and the piece that gets washed most.
- 2. One sweater set with a matching cap, from our sweater sets. Covers the cold nights and the first outing.
- 3. One front-open cardigan from the cardigan collection, for daytime and mild days, and because it goes on a sleeping baby without waking them.
- 4. A cap, socks and mittens set, two if you can, from caps, socks and mittens. Mittens double as scratch protection.
- 5. One knitted blanket, roughly 75 by 100 cm, for the cot and the pram.
All five together come to a compact, washable winter wardrobe that covers the hospital bag, the first month and the first outing. Our full newborn winter checklist breaks this down week by week if you want the longer version. Everything is knitted in soft, anti-pilling baby wool in our own unit in Navi Mumbai by the same team of women who have been with us since 2004, so it washes at home and lasts to the next child.
